Health and Safety Classes

For more than a century, the American Red Cross has been saving lives with health and safety education programs. You, too, need to be prepared to respond in the event of an emergency…and Red Cross training is a great way to gain the knowledge and skills you may need to save yourself, and others.

Each year, more than 60,000 Oregonians participate in one or more Red Cross education programs. Click on any of the links below to learn how you can join them.

To learn more about this class, view a short presentation here.

Babysitting Certification has no expiration.

Fee: $35.00

The Southern Oregon Chapter of the American Red Cross encourages families and caretakers to look for trained and certified babysitters for their childcare needs.

Each year, the Red Cross trains and certifies over 120,000 sitters nationwide through the Babysitter's Training program. Course participants learn to administer basic first aid; properly hold and feed a child; take emergency action when needed; monitor safe play and actively engage your child; and some may be certified in Infant and Child CPR.

"Even if you only need someone to watch the children while you pay bills or prepare a meal - you want peace of mind that your little ones are in capable hands. You should never just grab the first available person," says Sarah Mogle, Health and Safety Specialist in Klamath Falls. "If you don't have a Red Cross trained babysitter near you or if your current sitter isn't certified, make a gift to a youth you trust by giving them a certificate to the next Babysitter's Training class. It's one gift that will give back to you over and again."

Babysitting FAQ

  • Age to Babysit in Oregon - In Oregon , there is no minimum age listed in the laws for youth to baby-sit.
  • Babysitter Referral - The Southern Oregon Chapter does not provide babysitting referrals however parents have several options to locate a babysitter in their area:
  • Locate the nearest Park and Recreation center or YMCA and ask if parents can post a notice looking for sitter.
  • Take out a personal ad in the local high school newspaper or check with the career counselor as parents can often place a notice on their job board. Sometimes, this same option works well at the middle school level.

It is unlawful in Oregon to leave a child under the age of 10 unattended in or at any place for such period of time as may be likely to endanger the health or welfare of a child.

Children as young as eight years old are allowed in the "When I'm In Charge" class to teach them potentially life saving skills and strategies on preventing, preparing for and responding to emergencies if a parent or guardian is not immediately available.
